OGC Seeks Public Comment on OGC API – Features – Parts 4 & 5

Part 4 defines API building blocks that allow geospatial resources to be added to, replaced, modified and/or removed; while Part 5 specifies how to describe data using a logical schema.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) seeks public comment on two Parts of the OGC API – Features Standard: Part 4: Create, Replace, Update and Delete, and Part 5: Schemas. Comments are due by September 23, 2024.

OGC API – Features is a multi-part Standard that offers the capability to create, modify, and query spatial data on the Web and specifies requirements and recommendations for APIs that want to follow a standard way of sharing feature data. The specification is a multi-part document. The Core part of the specification describes the mandatory capabilities that every implementing service has to support but is restricted to read-access to spatial data. Additional capabilities that address specific needs are addressed in additional parts.

Part 4 specifies an extension to OGC API – Features that defines the behavior of a server that supports operations to add, replace, modify, or delete individual resources from a collection of geospatial data. Specifically, Part 4 defines the following operations.

  • How to add a new resource instance to a collection (i.e., create).
  • How to modify an existing resource from a collection. This includes entirely replacing the existing resource (i.e., replace) or simply modifying one or more properties of a resource (i.e., update).
  • How to remove an existing resource from a collection (i.e., delete).

Part 5 specifies an extension to OGC API – Features that defines how geospatial data, including features, can be described by a logical schema and how such schemas are published in an OGC Web API implementation. As logical schemas, the schemas describe the data independent of a particular format to represent the data.

OGC Members interested in staying up to date on the progress of this standard, or contributing to its development, are encouraged to join the OGC API – Features Standards Working Group via the OGC Portal. Non-OGC members who would like to know more about participating in this SWG are encouraged to contact the OGC Standards Program.

The candidate OGC API – Features – Part 4: Create, Replace, Update and Delete Standard (OGC 20-002r1) (.HTML) and candidate OGC API – Features – Part 5: Schemas Standard (OGC 23-058r1) (.HTML) are available for review and comment on the OGC Portal. Comments are due by September 23, 2024, and should be submitted via the method below.

To Comment:
Comments for either standard can be submitted as an issue on the OGC API – Features GitHub repository for a period ending on the “Close request date” listed above. Comments received will be consolidated and reviewed by OGC members for incorporation into the document.
