Building a Stronger Geospatial Community: Overture Maps Foundation Joins OGC

Uniting expertise to create open, interoperable geospatial solutions.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is pleased to announce that the Overture Maps Foundation (Overture), a collaborative effort to enable current and next-generation interoperable open map services and products, has joined our community as a Principal Member. By becoming part of OGC’s global network of innovators, Overture contributes its expertise to a collective effort aimed at harnessing the power of open geospatial data to meet the needs of our rapidly changing world.

For over 30 years, OGC has led the charge in advancing open Standards and promoting interoperability in geospatial technology while fostering collaboration across its global community. Overture’s dedication to creating reliable, interoperable map data aligns seamlessly with OGC’s mission and reinforces our shared commitment to developing solutions that address real-world needs.

“We’re excited to welcome Overture to the OGC community,” said Peter Rabley, CEO of OGC. “Overture’s innovative work in open geospatial data is helping tackle key challenges. From improving flood management and advancing urban planning to enhancing driver-assistance systems, their expertise in mapping and places data is driving the development of solutions that improve everyday life. By joining OGC, Overture strengthens our ability to evolve geospatial standards at pace with today’s fast-changing technologies and markets.”

Marc Prioleau, Executive Director of the Overture Maps Foundation, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We formed Overture because we understand that structured industry collaboration is needed to build open geospatial data at the quality demanded by application developers now and into the future. As users demand spatial data that is up-to-date and matches the changing world, it is critical to have open standards that are as dynamic as the challenges we address. We’re eager to work alongside other OGC members to create innovative solutions that meet these market needs.”

By joining the OGC Community, the two organizations unite their strong foundations of leadership, collaboration, and innovation in the geospatial sector. As a Principal Member of OGC, Overture will take an active role in OGC, serving on OGC’s Executive Planning Committee and participating in final approval decisions for all OGC Standards and nominations to the Board of Directors.

Overture joins the ranks of other industry-leading OGC Principal Members, including: AWS, Bentley, CAE, Dstl, the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST), Esri, Feng Chia University, the Saudi Arabian General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), Google, Hexagon, Oracle, Trimble, and the US Census Bureau.
