The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is seeking feedback and comments on the candidate UML to JSON Encoding Rules OGC Best Practice document before it is voted upon for adoption. Comments from non-members are encouraged. Comments are due by November 28, 2024.
The OGC Best Practice for UML to JSON Encoding Rules focuses on establishing a standardized method for converting geospatial conceptual schemas designed in Unified Modeling Language (UML) into JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format. This conversion is essential for ensuring smooth interoperability between different web applications that handle geospatial data, especially when these applications are developed by different entities.
The document builds upon previous efforts within OGC, particularly the OGC UML-to-GML Application Schema Pilot 2020 (UGAS-2020), and proposes a set of encoding rules that enable the automatic generation of JSON Schema from UML models. It offers a structured approach with detailed requirements and recommendations for the conversion process, while providing enough flexibility for different communities to tailor the encoding to their specific needs.
Eventually, the Best Practice document may support the development of an OGC Standard for the conversion of UML to JSON (Schema).
The most recent project leading to the Best Practice document was initiated by OGC Member Geonovum, while the Best Practice was developed by Geonovum in collaboration with interactive instruments. Other initiatives that have examined this topic have included OGC Testbeds. The approach documented in the Best Practice document has therefore been informed by lessons learned from several years of experimentation and collaboration between multiple OGC Members.
The candidate Best Practice for OGC – UML to JSON Encoding Rules (OGC 24-017) (.HTML) is available for review and comment on the OGC Portal. Comments are due by November 28, 2024, and should be submitted via the method below.
To Comment:
Comments can be submitted as an issue on the OGC Best Practice for OGC – UML to JSON Encoding Rules GitHub repository for a period ending on the “Close request date” listed above. Comments received will be consolidated and reviewed by OGC members for incorporation into the document.
